"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple famous supporters have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals frequently show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
