Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.
