Much like Storm Claudia swept through the northern region the previous evening, City swept United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline marked consecutive WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them a significant margin off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle league and continental football with a limited team has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared tired all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had tried to make changes with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in opposition, have no similar fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to accumulate for the United boss and his squad from the opening minute. Early Chances

Former City player Park came closest, rattling the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to record a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their lead when a excellent Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any opponent who placed above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
